Introduction

The book Under the Blood Red Sun, written by Graham Salisbury, explores how Tomi overcomes challenges he faced as a minority in Hawaii before and after the Pearl Harbor bombing. As a Japanese American, Tomi is discriminated for his race even though he was not involved in planning the attack against the United States and considers himself to be American. Tomi is tested several times in the book, but he learns to overcome these challenges and become resilient for the sake of helping his mother and sister during his father's and grandfather's arrests.

Our unit will explore how Tomi has overcome challenges in this life through different content areas and apply the theme to students' reality. We hope to inspire our students to aim for their goals despite any difficulties in their lives by learning from Tomi's experiences and other minorities who have suceeded in making their dreams come true.
