Grade: 9
Subject: Science
Activity 1: The Wonders of Projectile Motion
Common Core State Standards
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.9-10.9
Compare and contrast findings presented in a text to those
from other sources (including their own experiments), noting
when the findings support or contradict previous explanations
or accounts.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.9-10.5
Analyze the structure of the relationships among concepts in a
text, including relationships among key terms
(e.g., force, friction, reaction force, energy).
Learning Objectives
Students will be able to list the factors that affect projectile motion
Students will be able to create a cannon to demonstrate projectile motion
Describe Activity and what they will do
Students will be exploring the wonders of projectile motion. The first day we will dive into content development using articles online and offline, textbook. The reading strategies used will be jigsaws and silent reading. I will also show YouTube videos and a Virtual Simulator. During YouTube videos and lectures students will be engaged by filling out an advanced organizer. In addition the students will be exposed to African American scientists Katherine G. Johnson. This will culminate in a group project where students will form an experiment to predict the result of their projectile launcher. This will be their project for the culminating activity.
Integration of Theme:
African American Katherine G. Johnson Born in 1918
Understand the projectile motion of the missiles in Under the Blood Red Sun.

Activity 2: Natural Selection and it's Role in Sustainable Farming
Common Core State Standards
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.9-10.5
Analyze the structure of the relationships among concepts
in a text, including relationships among key terms
(e.g., force, friction, reaction force, energy).
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.9-10.6
Analyze the author's purpose in providing an explanation,
describing a procedure, or discussing an experiment in a text,
defining the question the author seeks to address.
Learning Objectives
Students will be able to define natural selection
Students will be able to explain the advantages and
disadvantages of today's factory farms
Describe Activity and what they will do
We will be researching Charles Darwin's concept of natural selection. Students will then link his ideas of natural selection by explaining it's role in the creation of superbugs in today's modern factory farms. Students will explore the work of Lloyd hall and uncover the challenges he faced as a minority scientists. We will uncover these concepts through the use of YouTube videos, online articles, songs, and the textbook. Reading strategies used will be jigsaws and a vocabulary preview. I will also teach the use of brain storming for their essay on the pros and cons of factory farming. As reinforcement students will be exposed to podcasts to study on their own.

Activity 3: The Animal Cell
Common Core State Standards
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.9-10.2
Determine the central ideas or conclusions of a text;
trace the text's explanation or depiction of a complex process,
phenomenon, or concept; provide an accurate summary of
the text.
CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RST.9-10.5
Analyze the structure of the relationships among concepts
in a text, including relationships among key terms
(e.g., force, friction, reaction force, energy).
Learning Objectives
Students will be able to list the organelles of the animal cell
Students will be able to build a three dimensional model of a cell.
Describe Activity and what they will do
Students will explore the world of animal cells and uncover that all animals are made up of the same building blocks. In addition, students will explore the work of Frank C. Dukepoo and his struggles as a minority. Students will learn this content by PowerPoint presentations, youtube videos, Virtual Simulations, Reading the textbook, gallery walks, Quick Writing Assignments and a biology song. As a reinforcement students will be given a link to an online game about the animal cell. All this information will be used to help students so that they can create a three dimensional model of a cell and the top ten models will be displayed during the culminating activity.
